The Railway Men tops Netflix charts for 100 days in India; trends in 36 countries https://ift.tt/l5ZIofc

The Netflix series, which has been inspired by true events garnered massive global appeal, trending across 36 countries shortly after its release. A first from the collaboration between two content powerhouses - Netflix and Yash Raj Films (YRF), The Railway Men went on to define a new era of storytelling in the country. As the series celebrates its 100-day milestone on Netflix, it still remains the most-watched series on the service in India. It has consecutively featured in the India Top 10 series list, since its launch. This achievement highlights a pioneering force in the industry, YRF continues to pave the way for new trends, influencing the content landscape across platforms.

Set against the backdrop of the world’s worst industrial disaster, the Bhopal Gas leak, this four-part series, directed by the talented debutant Shiv Rawail, boasts of powerful storytelling and meticulous attention to detail. From its captivating narrative to the immersive screenplay, this poignant reimagining of a real-life event has garnered widespread acclaim.

Shiv Rawail, the director of the series, shares his perspective, "Creating The Railway Men has been an incredible journey, and witnessing its impact on audiences worldwide is truly gratifying. When I was evaluating scripts and I came across the story of The Railway Men, the only thought that I was left with was that can I tell a story about the darkest night in history through a lens of compassion, hope, and courage. It's of course a story that needed to be told, and I'm grateful to YRF for the opportunity to bring it to life and Netflix for making it reach audiences across the world. The success of the series reflects the dedication and passion of the entire team involved."

The talented ensemble - R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu, and Babil Khan, along with Juhi Chawla, Sunny Hinduja, Raghubir Yadav, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and Mandira Bedi - has delivered outstanding performances and left the audiences worldwide awestruck. The background score, composed by the two-time Grammy Award-winning composer Sam Slater, further enhances the viewing experience, creating an unforgettable journey for every viewer.

Kay Kay Menon, who delivered a stellar performance in the series, adds, "Being a part of The Railway Men was not just an acting experience; it was an emotional and thought-provoking journey. Consistently securing a spot in the top 10 most-watched series on Netflix in India for so long is more than a win; it's a testament to the collective effort we put in. I'm really happy to have been part of something so meaningful. It's more than just a show; it's a journey that leaves a lasting impression, and I'm proud to be a part of its impactful story."

R Madhavan weighs in on the series' triumphant 100-day milestone, "Being part of The Railway Men has been an enriching experience, and celebrating its 100-day mark is both humbling and exhilarating. The response from audiences and critics has been overwhelming, and it's heartening to see the series still reigning supreme on Netflix. The show’s success is a testament to the universal themes it explores and the commitment of everyone involved. As an actor, it's immensely fulfilling to be part of a project that not only entertains but also leaves a lasting impact on the audience. Here's to The Railway Men continuing to captivate audiences and setting new milestones in the world of storytelling."

"As I say these words, I ache with nostalgia for having been a part of The Railway Men. Nothing will ever be the same, we don’t realise it when the moments that are forever going to change our life pass by us. The series taught me so much about life and in that sense taught me about acting but the most important lesson it brought to me was that the story is and will always be bigger than any individual. The power of the story and its effect on people will always be greater than that of an individual. And also very importantly, I HAD SO MUCH FUN,” shares Babil Khan as he reflects on his journey.

Expressing his excitement about the success of the series, Divyenndu says, "Being part of The Railway Men has been a remarkable journey, and celebrating 100 days of success on Netflix is truly heartwarming. The series consistently ranking among the top on Netflix and the love that the audience has shown for the series and the characters has been overwhelming. Working with such a talented cast has been a highlight of my experience, and their dedication has been pivotal in making our journey a success on this global stage.

Prem Chopra recalls “discussing girls” with Rishi Kapoor; calls late actor “jolly good chap” https://ift.tt/To5alMP

Veteran actor Prem Chopra, known for his iconic villainous roles in Bollywood films like Upkaar and Dostana, recently shared heartwarming memories of his late friend and co-star Rishi Kapoor. The duo continued to work together in films like Nagina, Naseeb, and Prem Granth.

Chopra and Kapoor shared a close bond, both on and off-screen. Their friendship began when Chopra delivered the now-famous dialogue "Prem naam hai mera... Prem Chopra" in Kapoor's debut film Bobby in 1973. This line, ironically, became synonymous with Chopra's name and launched him into stardom.

Recalling their early days, Chopra told ANI, "We used to be together all the time. He got all right, he got free from cancer, but then again got into a problem. He was a very nice actor and a jolly good chap. We used to discuss girls. We were having a lot of pranks with each other. There were so many funny things to do.”

Rishi Kapoor tragically passed away in 2020 after a battle with leukaemia. His passing left a void in the Indian film industry and in the hearts of his countless fans.

Their friendship transcended the silver screen, with the 88-year-old actor revealing a personal connection to the Kapoor family through his marriage to Uma Malhotra, sister-in-law to the legendary Raj Kapoor.

Speaking of the professional front, Prem Chopra was last seen in Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor. Helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, it also featured Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna. Despite getting polarised reviews, the film performed well at the box office.

EXCLUSIVE: Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel reveal that even after watching Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies a hundred times, Aamir Khan cries every single time https://ift.tt/iLRZ5dn

It was early Friday morning when Bollywood Hungama exclusively met Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel to talk about their upcoming flick, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by superstar Aamir Khan. The trio were visibly excited as they opened up about the film and a lot more. There was also a child-like enthusiasm in all of them which made for a fun experience.

How did you all bag the film? I am sure it must have not been easy as a lot of people must have auditioned for these parts… Sparsh: Whoever you can think of auditioned, had for this role (smiles). As for how we bagged the role, I think we acted well (laughs)! We conveyed the honesty of what the character demands. The common factor between all three of us was that we were really excited about the role as we knew that it would move us in the right direction as an actor as well as a human being. Pratibha: Surprisingly, all three of us knew after the audition that we had gotten the part (Sparsh and Nitanshi nod). Sparsh: Romil Jain, the casting director, called us and offered the role. We read the four pages of the film’s plot. It was so well written that we knew that film bhi achchi hi banegi. In 30 minutes, I sent the audition video. Romil called and asked me ‘Kaunsi teri train chhutne waali hai ki tune aadhe ghante mein bhej diya?’! Then, there was a lull of two months. I was getting desperate and you can’t even ask as the casting people can get irritated. Finally, Romil called and told me that I had bagged the part. Then Kiran ma’am called us and she asked us the feedback about the script. We sat in this very room.

How is Kiran Rao on the sets? Is she a taskmaster? Pratibha: Ma’am knows what she wants and how the actors should deliver. Aur aise mein taskmaster hona zaroori hai. She was not that difficult as a taskmaster. She would very sweetly convey what needs to be done. Sparsh: Her level of human management is insane. This applies not just to the actors but also to the crew. She created a lovely environment that was very supportive of us actors. On her sets, sab shaant rehte hai, chillana nahin hota. As a result, our performances improved. Pratibha: I remember I was on a set and an associate director used to talk rudely to us. As a result, meri energy down ho jaati thi. On the contrary, everyone on the set of this film would talk so lovingly. Nitanshi: We were given liberty to explore the characters but at the same time, there were certain rules. It was unsaid but you know ki yeh cheez aise present karni hai. Ma’am would ask how we’d like to do the scene and accordingly, she’ll guide us.

Laapataa Ladies was filmed more than 2 years ago, in early 2022 and it’s releasing in March 2024. What was the waiting period like? Did you guys ever get frustrated? Pratibha: Sir, pucho mat! I’d call Nitanshi and she’d call me. We’d only discuss, ‘Bhai, film kab aayegi?’. Nitanshi: The film was going to be released in March 2023 when my board exams were going on. I still remember it was going to release a day before my Science exams. I was like ‘Kaash dates idhar udhar ho jaaye’. I wouldn’t have been able to see the film at that point as my crucial exams were going to be held. Fir thodi aur postpone hui. Aur postpone hote hote it’s now finally coming a year later (laughs). Sparsh: But I feel waiting for two years was worth it. Aamir sir himself got involved with the film’s editing. The way he understands the pulse of the audience is incredible. I used to tell myself, ‘It’s ok that the film is getting delayed. Jab bhi aaye, sahi time pe aaye’. Nitanshi: And this is indeed the best time. Pratibha: During the trailer preview, Aamir sir was with us. He just saw the trailer once and said ‘Do frames sahi nahin hai’! We were so stunned. We were like, ‘Sir aapne kaise aur kab notice kiya?’ (laughs).

What did Aamir Khan say about your performance in the film? Nitanshi: Jab bhi woh bolte hai, hamare aankhon mein aansoo aa jaate hai. Woh itna accha bolte hai. We recently attended the film’s screening in Bhopal. Suddenly, we were told that Aamir sir wanted to meet us. He met us and said, ‘Kya perform kiya hai tum teeno ne’. He then pointed to the scenes that he loved. Pratibha and I looked at each other and asked in unison, ‘Ro le?’ (laughs)! Everytime he sees the film, he has some positive feedback for us. After all, who isn’t a fan of Aamir sir? Sparsh: At times, I can’t believe (when he praises). Main toh blank ho jaata hoon. As actors, it boosts us that we have done a great job and now we have to grow even more. Pratibha: Sir has seen the film a hundred times and sau baar dekhne ke baad, it’s not necessary ki aap har baar ro lo. But since he’s so sensitive and unka dil itna saaf hai, everytime he (gets teary-eyed). I wonder ‘After seeing the film so many times, how does he talk with the same emotion?’.

Sparsh, you played a villager before in Jamtara but Laapataa Ladies is set in a different space and even genre. How did you prep for it? Sparsh: I am glad you said that. Since I come from an acting school, I could have played it like I did in Jamtara, which would have made my work easier. People wouldn’t even have minded either. However, I shaped my part according to the feedback I got after discussing the role with Kiran ma’am. I came across a Zomato delivery person, Sanjay. His eyes had a lot of innocence. Deepak ki aankhon mein bhi kaafi maasomiyat hai. So, I was inspired by him. Nevertheless, I have tried making it different (from my earlier works). That’s what gives me a kick – to challenge myself.

How was it shooting in trains and railway stations that too at a place like Yeola where no film has been shot? Sparsh: Shooting on a train is a challenge. The director needs to tell the motorman to start the train when going for a take. If there’s a retake, the train has to go back which will take half an hour. So every take is risky because a wrong take will lead to a waste of time and money. Also, having 300 extras in the crowd was another challenge. And while shooting on the train, if you need to use the toilet, you can’t. Pratibha: Hum sab ne itna control kiya hai ki kya batayein (laughs).

Sparsh, there’s a scene in the film (also shown in the trailer) where you fall from the bicycle. How many retakes did you give and were you hurt? Sparsh: (Pauses) That’s a story in itself. Thanks to that scene, I had to go through a ligament surgery. I have this habit. Main ‘cut’ nahin bolta. I like the take to keep going. While filming, the chain of the cycle got entangled and I fell with a thud. I didn’t want to say ‘Cut’. So, I started running and that was a mistake. That aggravated the injury, resulting in surgery. Nevertheless, the take came out quite well. AKP took care of the surgery and expenses, for which I am really grateful. Pratibha: But he fell from the cycle one more time (laughs). Sparsh: Yes. It required me to ride the cycle with Nitanshi sitting on the ‘danda’ (frame). I was scared as Nitanshi was just 14 and is very delicate. Hence, I asked Ranta (Pratibha) to rehearse with me. Pratibha: Kyunki main girungi toh chalega! Sparsh: Well, yeah, yeh girti toh mujhe koi dikkat nahin thi (laughs)! I cycled with her thrice and there was no problem. Then, when I cycled with Nitanshi, we fell!

Interestingly, Laapataa Ladies has already been shown to many people across the country before the release… Pratibha: I believe that when actors go for city visits, they present the trailer of their film and talk about it. We, on the other hand, would screen our film! It’s a big risk to do so but the makers had that confidence. Otherwise, in today’s times, anyone can say anything on social media and try to harm the film. But I am so glad that only the good responses are pouring in. We are getting a lot of love. So, I haven’t seen the dark side of promotions and social media in this case. Sparsh: With this film, dark side hai hi nahin. It’s also Aamir sir and Kiran ma’am’s brilliance ki unko pata hai ki unhone kya film banayi hai.

Nitanshi, I believe that you are a part of Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan… Nitanshi (smiles): Yes, it’s finally releasing on Eid.

Were you also a part of Vicky Donor (2012)? What was your role? Sparsh and Pratibha (shocked): Really? Nitanshi (laughs): I was one of the 50-60 babies shown in the film’s climax. I was the cutest kid (laughs)! Jokes apart, there were many cute kids in the film.

Sparsh, you have another film in March, Ae Watan Mere Watan, co-starring Sara Ali Khan… Sparsh: Yes. We should meet again to talk about it! It’s a message-oriented film about the first radio station started by Indians.

Is there a possibility of a sequel to Laapataa Ladies? Nitanshi and Pratibha (excited): Yes, for sure! Sparsh: I want that humein iss characters ke upar films banate rehna chahiye!

Would it be called Laapataa Gents? Sparsh (laughs): Yes, I like it. Nitanshi and Pratibha: No, no. Ladies hi rahegi. Nitanshi: I have already thought of the plot. Pratibha: Maine bhi socha hai. Sparsh: You should narrate your ideas to Kiran ma’am.

What will you guys do on March 1, the day Laapataa Ladies releases? Pratibha: I’ll take time for myself, jo bade bade starts karte hai! Main woh feel lena shuru kar rahi hoon. I am not going to be tense just because it’s the release day. Hence, I’ll meditate and tell myself, ‘Aal izz well’ (laughs)! Nitanshi: I have no plans. I’ll go with the flow. Pratibha: You know what, we should all pamper ourselves. We should go for breakfast or brunch. Sparsh: I think I am going to sleep till late. Pratibha: Toh fir seedha brunch pe mil. Nitanshi: Sounds like a plan. Sparsh (tells the writer in a lighter vein): Aap bhi aa jaana!

Movie Review: LAAPATAA LADIES works due to the plot, performances, and some scenes. https://ift.tt/8Yr4ANP

Star Cast: Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta

Director: Kiran Rao

Synopsis: LAAPATAA LADIES is the story of a missing bride. On January 29, 2001, Deepak Kumar (Sparsh Shrivastava) marries Phool (Nitanshi Goel). Both board the unreserved compartment in the Belpur Katariya Express. He sits next to two other newly married couples. All the brides have covered their faces with ‘ghoonghat’. When his destination – Murti station – arrives, Deepak grabs the hand of a woman, who he believes is Phool, and gets down. He takes her to his village, Surajmukhi. His family members and neighbours are in a festive mood. But they get the shock of their lives when they open the veil and they realize that Deepak has accidentally brought another woman with him. This second bride turns out to be Pushpa Rani (Pratibha Ranta). She claims that the name of his groom is Pankaj and that she is from a village named Sambela. The next day, Deepak goes to the police station to file a complaint. The cop in charge, Shyam Manohar (Ravi Kishan), is initially amused by the goof-up. But he soon realizes that Pushpa Rani might not be as innocent as she claims. Meanwhile, Phool is stranded at Pateela railway station. Here, she befriends a tough but kind-hearted tea stall owner, Manju Maai (Chhaya Kadam), who teaches her important life lessons. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Laapataa Ladies Story Review: Biplab Goswami's story is unconventional and amusing. Sneha Desai's screenplay adds to the entertainment quotient. At the same time, it also raises some important points. Sneha Desai's dialogues (additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma) are funny and also quite sharp and hit the right chord.

Kiran Rao's direction is uncomplicated and captivating. The narrative is easy to understand while the characters are straight out of life. The humour is infused in an organic manner; not a single dialogue or punch seems forced. The story could have seemed unconvincing or flawed but Kiran makes sure that it looks believable why the bride got lost and why she was not able to reunite with her hubby. As the story progresses, Kiran touches upon certain social aspects plaguing society. Yet again, it seamlessly becomes a part of the goings-on. The character of Manju Maai is a masterstroke in this regard. Kiran Rao reserves the best for the finale. It is clapworthy, to say the least.

On the flipside, though the director ties all loose ends, she misses one – Pushpa’s hubby had spotted Phool at the station and ideally, he should have informed the cop about it. It would have made the investigation easier. Secondly, the angle of MLA Mani Singh is hilarious. However, it serves no purpose to the story as the MLA and his speech are forgotten. Lastly, the buzz is very limited and this can impact its box office collections.

Laapataa Ladies | Official Trailer | Aamir Khan Productions Kindling Pictures Jio Studios

Laapataa Ladies Movie Performances: LAAPATAA LADIES belongs to both the leading ladies. Nitanshi Goel’s innocence is her biggest strength and she enhances it with her supreme performance. Pratibha Ranta is quite confident and plays her part with panache. Sparsh Shrivastava, too, puts his best foot forward and gets into the skin of his character. Chhaya Kadam is terrific and delivers a National Award-worthy performance. Ravi Kishan, too, rocks the show and only, an actor of his calibre would have done justice. Rachna Gupta (Poonam; Bhabhi) and Geeta Agrawal Sharma (Yashoda; Deepak's mother) leave a mark. Satendra Soni (Chotu) and Abeer Jain (Bablu) are adorable. Bhaskar Jha (Pushpa's husband Pradeep), Daood Hussain (Gunjan), Durgesh Kumar (Dubey ji; cop) and Kanupriya Rishimum (Bela; cop) are fine.

Laapataa Ladies Movie music and other technical aspects: Ram Sampath's music is lovely but won’t have a shelf life. 'Doubtwa' and 'Beda Paar' are quirky. 'O Sajni Re' is soulful while 'Sajni' is fair. Ram Sampath's background score is in sync with the film's mood.

Vikash Nowlakha's cinematography gives the film a straight-out-of-life feel. The locales are fresh and never before seen in any film. Vikram Singh's production design is quite real. Darshan Jalan's costumes are authentic. Jabeen Merchant's editing is smooth but could have been slicker.

Laapataa Ladies Movie Conclusion: On the whole, LAAPATAA LADIES works due to the amusing plot, performances, underlying message and some memorable funny and emotional scenes. At the box office, it has the potential to grow with each passing day.

Vicky Kaushal says Hrithik Roshan was last person to witness stardom: “Right now, there’s confusion among the younger lot” https://ift.tt/1eUpt28

Vicky Kaushal has come a long way since way Masaan. He enjoys a great fan following. However, he doesn't consider himself a star yet. The actor says that the stardom that Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan have enjoyed is so different from today's times. He also said that the last time he could connect with someone was Hrithik Roshan.

Speaking to GQ India, he said, “I’ll tell you very frankly: Stardom is defined by the number of people who come to watch your film on day one, in a theatre—without being dependent on how good the trailer was, how fantastic the songs were, or how cool the poster was. They come to watch you. Irrespective of everything else. That’s the true definition of stardom. And honestly, that hasn’t happened to me yet. I still need to achieve that. I am not there yet.”

The actor continued, "I think the idea of classic stardom will be replaced by a different version. The kind of popularity that Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan must have seen is as different from what Shah Rukh Khan has experienced. It’s still huge but a different manifestation of the same glory. The last person I felt this way about was Hrithik Roshan. It was a phenomenon that hit everybody. Right now, there’s confusion among the younger lot. Because we see a star every week who trends and then nobody remembers them a few weeks later. For this generation, it will be much harder to attain the stardom of the past.”

On the work front, Vicky Kaushal will next star in Chhava with Rashmika Mandanna, Love & War with Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor and Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam with Triptii Dimri. Manushi Chhillar on her prep to play a radar officer in Operation Valentine: "We had someone from the Indian Air Force team on set" https://ift.tt/GtsQN3i

With only a few days to go for Varun Tej and Manushi Chhillar starrer Operation Valentine, the actress gives us an interesting insight into the process of playing a radar officer. Talking about her process of preparation in detail, Manushi Chhillar says, "My prep for Operation Valentine included a lot of basics just to simply understand the structure of the Air Force, understand what a radar officer is supposed to do, basic things like body language, the tonality of your voice and how to give a certain command. These are the few things that I had to work on."

Sony Pictures International Productions, a studio that has also backed patriotic films like Major, made sure there was someone on the film's sets during the entire shoot, ensuring authenticity and accuracy in the character. "Fortunately, we had someone from the Indian Air Force team on set. So, I always had that guidance on set whenever we needed any extra information or wherever I was going away from how a normal radar officer would do a certain thing. So, it was learning a lot of basics. It was not just learning how to portray a radar officer, but also learning the things that happen in the Air Force, or what basic terms like an evacuation and the kind of planes that are flying. So, just understanding all of that was a completely new world. I am a DRDO kid, so obviously, I know things from the surface, but this was me going deep into it," she continues.

Operation Valentine is produced by Sony Pictures International Productions, Sandeep Mudda's Renaissance Pictures and co-produced by God Bless Entertainment (Vakil Khan) and Nandakumar Abbineni. Shakti Pratap Singh Hada, a seasoned ad-film maker and VFX aficionado, will be marking his directorial debut with this film. Written by Shakti Pratap Singh Hada, Aamir Khan and Siddharth Raj Kumar, the film will be released on 1st March 2024 in Telugu and Hindi. Janhvi Kapoor says she learnt nothing in acting school in the US: “Could have used that time getting to know my people and my country” https://ift.tt/EUJ1iOr

Actor Janhvi Kapoor, daughter of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, has often been critical of her foreign learning of acting. The actress was in an acting school in the US, where they taught more about Hollywood. She once again reflected on those days and said that she learnt nothing in school and could have used that time to learn more about India.

Speaking to The Week, Janhvi said, “I learnt nothing there. My main agenda, and I think the thrill in it for me was… for the first time to be in an environment where I wasn’t being identified as someone’s daughter. And I think that anonymity was so refreshing and that’s what I held on to the most.”

“The format of the school that I studied over there was very deeply rooted in how Hollywood works, how their auditioning process is, what it’s like to meet casting agents,” she said.

Janhvi added, “I wish I could have used that time getting to know my people and my country and my language a little better because I am telling the stories of my people, not of them.”

“I just wish I did more things that would make me relate to my people and I did. Once I started shooting for Dhadak, I made a 180 and I realised that the only thing that matters is, that I want to tell stories of my country, I want to know the people of my country, I want to be able to speak to them, I want to be able to think like them, feel like them and sitting in LA, going to Malibu on the weekend isn’t going to cut it. It just makes you so detached and jaded,” Janhvi said.

On the work front, Janhvi Kapoor will next star in Devara: Part 1, Ulajh, Mr and Mrs Mahi and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. ALSO READ: Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor reunite for second time for Shashank Khaitan's Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari

Article 370 Movie Review: ARTICLE 370 is a gripping tale https://ift.tt/Jmtd2PU

Star Cast: Yami Gautam Dhar, Priya Mani, Vaibhav Tatwawadi, Skand Thakur

Director: Aditya Suhas Jambhale

Synopsis: ARTICLE 370 is the story of two women who changed history. On July 8, 2016, Zooni Haksar (Yami Gautam Dhar) of the Intelligence Division finds out crucial information that a dreaded terrorist, Burhan (Shivam Khajuria), is hiding in Kokernag, Kashmir. She asks her senior, Khawar Ali (Raj Arjun), for permission but he instructs her to wait. Zooni chooses not to and executes the operation with the help of CRPF officer Yash Chauhan (Vaibhav Tatwawadi) and his team. Burhan is killed and it angers a section of political leaders. They provoke the youth, leading to violence in the Valley. The Intelligence Division suspends Zooni for not following orders. She is shifted to Delhi where she goes into depression. A year later, Rajeshwari Swaminathan (Priya Mani), of the PMO, approaches Zooni and invites her to lead a team in the National Investigative Agency (NIA) in Srinagar. Zooni accepts the offer though she makes it clear that all their efforts would not lead to any concrete result as long as Article 370 exists. The Union Government soon breaks the alliance with Parveena Andrabi (Divya Seth Shah) in Kashmir. They also impose President's Rule, thus ensuring that leaders of different political parties don't unite to form a coalition. Rajeshwari soon confesses to Zooni that the Centre plans to revoke Article 370. But they need to find a way to do so legally and at the same time, ensure that Peace is not disturbed in the Valley. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Story Review: Aditya Dhar and Monal Thaakar's story, inspired by true events, is exciting. Everyone is aware that Article 370 was abrogated but no one knows how it was carried out. Aditya Dhar, Aditya Suhas Jambhale, Arjun Dhawan and Monal Thaakar's screenplay (additional screenplay by Aarsh Vora) is gripping. The writing becomes a bit technical in places but the writers compensate for it with some entertaining and thrilling moments. Aditya Dhar, Aditya Suhas Jambhale, Arjun Dhawan and Monal Thaakar's dialogues are powerful and clapworthy.

Aditya Suhas Jambhale's direction is captivating. The film is 160 minutes long but doesn’t get boring or lengthy as a lot is happening every minute. The makers adopt a no-nonsense and realistic approach and it gives the film a nice touch. The first half doesn’t pack a punch, as intended, but post-interval, the film gets much better. The scene where Zooni interrogates Yakub Shaikh (Sumit Kaul) will be loved by the masses. The episode on how a crucial piece of information was deleted from a legal document is quite a shocker. Two tracks run simultaneously in the climax and both are entertaining and captivating.

On the flipside, though the makers have tried their best to simplify the narrative, a few details might be difficult to decipher. Hence, those expecting it to be a conventional entertainer might be a bit disappointed. Secondly, in places, the film gives a feeling of being one-sided and not covering all elements of the story. For instance, Article 370 was revoked for the betterment of the people of Kashmir. However, the aam junta and their hardships are never focused in the film, except for the scene of a sarpanch (Middat Ullah Khan). Lastly, the assassination attempt in the climax is nail-biting but it also raises the question of whether it actually happened in real.

Article 370 | Official Trailer | Yami Gautam Dhar, Priyamani | Jio Studios | B62 Studios

Performances:  Yami Gautam Dhar yet again delivers a power-packed performance. In fact, this is her most accomplished performance. She is quite convincing in the action and interrogating scenes but watch out for her in the emotional scenes. The manner in which she delivers the monologue in the first half gives goosebumps. Priya Mani keeps her act restrained, as per the character requirement and is apt for the part. Vaibhav Tatwawadi is quite likeable. Raj Arjun and Skand Thakur (Wasim Abbasi) lend able support. Sumit Kaul, Salahuddin Jalal (Raj Zutshi) and Rajiv Kumar (Shamsher Abdali) leave a huge mark. Divya Seth Shah and Irawati Harshe Mayadev (Brinda Kaul) are decent. Kiran Karmarkar (Home Minister) is superb and takes the entertainment quotient of the film many notches higher. Asit Redij (Opposition leader Rohit Thapar), too, puts his best foot forward. Arun Govil (Prime Minister) is okay and it seemed like he was trying too hard. Janya Khandpur (Sabia), Middat Ullah Khan, Mohan Agashe (Jagmohan Patil) and Ashwini Koul (Zakir Naikoo) are fair.

Music and other technical aspects: Shashwat Sachdev's music doesn't register. Ideally, ARTICLE 370 should have been a song-less film. But Shashwat Sachdev's background score is kickass and very different from the usual BGMs.

Siddharth Vasani's cinematography is breathtaking and uncomplicated in action scenes. Sujeet Subhash Sawant and Sriram Kanan Iyengar's production design is rich. Veera Kapur Ee's costumes are realistic yet stylish. Parvez Shaikh's action is not gory at all. Identical Brains's VFX is acceptable. Shivkumar V Panicker's editing is smooth.

Conclusion: On the whole, ARTICLE 370 is a gripping tale that attempts to depict an important chapter of India’s history in an entertaining and simple manner. At the box office, the topic of the film and the trailer has caught attention. Moreover, the film releases on a day when tickets are available for just Rs. 99. As a result, it can open strongly and emerge successful at the box office in the long run, provided it enjoys a good word of mouth.

It was such an honour to share the stage and sit next to Manoj ji - who I have grown to share a very special bond with - while we chatted about the nearly magical anecdotes that went into the building of our film. The audience was spellbound by Manoj ji's aura, as was I. It was an evening I will not easily forget." ALSO READ: Manoj Bajpayee picks scripts instinctively: It has to be very well written. EXCLUSIVE: Harshvardhan Rane does an Aamir Khan; goes around colleges to distribute pamphlets of Dange; leaves his female fans STUNNED: “Main toh canteen mein ghus ke de raha hoon. Log soch rahe hai, ‘Yeh kahan se aa gaya’” https://ift.tt/MDRS9fi

The trailer of Dange was unveiled on February 17 and got noticed thanks to its youthful appeal, catchy music and stylized edit. What has also been noticed is the way lead actor Harshvardhan Rane has adopted a unique strategy to promote the action entertainer. Since the last few days, he has been visiting several colleges and distributing pamphlets of Dange himself. The video that the actor has posted shows students astonished to see the dashing actor in front of them. It makes for a great watch and it instantly reminds one of a similar strategy adopted by Aamir Khan while promoting his debut film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). The video of the superstar putting up his film’s poster on the auto rickshaws in Mumbai is quite well-known.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Harshvardhan Rane to understand what made him opt for such a promotional tactic. He said, “It’s a very basic idea if you ask me. I don’t know why people feel it’s a very cool strategy. Since childhood, I have seen in my hometown Gwalior that whenever a shop was inaugurated or when the circus used to come to the town, pamphlets used to be distributed. Nowadays, they are called flyers. Hum toh isko pamphlet hi bolte the. These pamphlets used to come in fluorescent colours, either bright pink or bright green. So, this idea was imprinted deeply in my mind.”

He continued, “Meanwhile, I saw that my director and my producer have given their best. I have given my best while shooting. I wondered how I give my best during promotions. On social media, we all are anyway asking viewers to come and watch our film. But I wanted to do more and that’s how I got the idea of distributing pamphlets.”

So how do students react when they see none other than Harshvardhan Rane distributing the flyer? The actor answered, “They hold their mouth (laughs). Sometimes, their mouth is open. They don’t know what to say. Main toh canteen mein ghus ke de raha hoon. Log soch rahe hai, ‘Yeh kahan se aa gaya’! Of course, I take permission from the college authorities.”

He continued, “Koi stardom wali baat nahin hai. It’s just that they don’t expect. They expect that I’ll maintain a distance and I’ll convey my message on social media. But I have not followed any norms. Why will I do now (smiles)?”

Was he inspired by Aamir Khan? The actor clarified, “I remember reading Aamir sir’s interview (about doing the same). He had put up posters of his film. I don’t think he distributed flyers. But yeah, I get your point that it’s in the same zone. On-ground promotion hi tha woh bhi.”

Harshvardhan Rane then spoke about his game plan, “Every day, I cover 2-3 colleges. Today (Saturday, February 17), I completed 10 colleges. The whole team of film promoted the film in 1 college while I alone went and promoted it in 10 colleges. I feel when you take the whole entourage and security, you achieve less. Instead, I believe that utho, basic kapde pehno, flyers uthao, college mein ghuso aur dhaava bol do (laughs)!”

Harshvardhan Rane achieved a huge fan following thanks to his debut Hindi film, Sanam Teri Kasam (2016). His subsequent films failed to do well. His last flick, Tara vs Bilal (2022), got a namesake release in a handful of cinemas and it saddened his fans since it was a fine effort. Harshvardhan smiled as he remarked, “I believe in the Bhagavad Gita’s saying that I have done my karm; I shouldn’t be thinking of anything else. I focus on the trailer, how I have acted and how my director has directed. If I start thinking about the box office results, fir toh mushkil ho jaayegi. Some of the biggest actors have not been able to figure out (the box office). If they are not able to figure, then who am I?”

He added, “I am getting work without box office. It’s not like I have given Rs. 100 crore grossers. Without any box office success, I have worked in 9 films. That goes to say something and I am not going to depend on box office for getting work.”

Harshvardhan Rane signed off by saying, “I am thankful. Every day, I call my director Bejoy Nambiar and tell him, ‘Sir, this is an emotional call’. He laughs when I say that. I then tell him how proud I am of myself and him.”

Besides Harshvardhan, Dange also stars Ehan Bhat, Nikita Dutta and T J Bhanu. It releases in cinemas on March 1.

Milan Luthria completes 25 years as a director on February 19. In 1999, on this day, his debut directorial venture, Kachche Dhaage arrived in cinemas. Since then, he has given novel yet entertaining films like Taxi No 9211 (2006), Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010), The Dirty Picture (2011), Baadshaho (2017), Tadap (2021) as well as the recent web series, Sultan Of Delhi (2023). As he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a filmmaker, Milan Luthria spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about his journey and what drives him.

Milan Luthria began by saying, “For a person who was groomed under Mr Mahesh Bhatt, I wanted to make my kind of a film. I didn’t want to make his kind of films. He accepted my point of view very nicely. He offered me a couple of films when I was with them. I told him, ‘Sir, I’ll become like you’. I learned what I had to and I wanted to do my own thing.”

He explained what drew him to the idea of Kachche Dhaage, “I had an interest in doing a Western-meets-desi kind of cinema. This was also the period we had not seen a two-hero film for a long time. I grew up watching Deewaar (1975), Sholay (1975), Trishul (1978), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) etc. These films had action, strong heroes, beautiful women, music, good locations etc. Kachche Dhaage brought that era back. Many heroes had stopped working with each other. There was a competitive spirit. Hence, this film came as a double bonanza. It had Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan. It also had Manisha Koirala, who was a huge star at that time. I then became comfortable with the two-hero set-up and repeated it in Taxi No 9211, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Sultan Of Delhi etc.”

He continued, “The second achievement was that it was a road film. Nobody had attempted a story where the characters were constantly on the move. Hence, this was a novelty. The characters are on trains, horses, bikes, jeeps etc. It was a difficult shoot. We shot in Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pune etc. We had to keep on shifting locations.”

Milan Luthria then revealed his mantra, “Break the clutter, whenever you can. Don’t do what the others are doing. Do what you believe in, even if it is not being done. For instance, no one would have thought of making a film like The Dirty Picture. Kachche Dhaage broke that myth ki ‘if XYZ are making this kind of film, then ABC also has to follow him’. That’s how you stand out. And you have to be relevant. I am not someone who believes in milestones. Milestones are just good memories. You have to leave the memory behind and move on with the times. Nevertheless, today, it’s fun to revisit and see all these photographs again.” The interview was being conducted in Milan’s office where he nicely displayed well-preserved posters of Kachche Dhaage while he went down memory lane.

Milan Luthria further said, “To keep yourself fresh is the number one priority. And you cannot stay fresh if you are constantly indulging in film industry gossip and conversations. Then, you would walk on the same path as others. Just because a particular kind of film has clicked, you don’t have to do the same. And this is very common in our industry – people start following a trend until that trend breaks. I have always kept myself like a sponge. If I come across an idea and it makes a connection with me, then I don’t care about cast, genre etc. Taxi No 9211 was a completely unexpected film then. I never thought that I’d do a war-based film like Deewaar (2004). It was a great experience. Unfortunately, it was released at the wrong time when a couple of war films had not done well.”

He added, “When Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai came my way, I wondered, ‘Now what do I do with the gangster genre? Am I making Company (2002) again?’ The first draft had dialogues like ‘Apun tere ko bolta hai’, ‘Aisa nahin karne ka’ etc. I said right away, ‘Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma) can make this film. I can’t’. When I was asked, ‘If not this, then what?’, my answer was, ‘Let’s refer to Salim-Javed’. This is how we changed the language, flamboyance, look etc. That gave a fresh experience to the viewers.”

Milan further opened up, “Then, The Dirty Picture happened. People called it ‘porn’ and ‘filthy’ and that I have gone mad! But we believed in it. The bottom-line is – stay away from the churning of the business. Maintain your individuality. Secondly, you can never get lazy in this business. You have to be fit and sharp. You have to work very hard.”

The acclaimed filmmaker then talked about the filmmakers who inspired him and why he doesn’t want to jump onto the box office discussion bandwagon, “My idols are Yash Chopra, and also Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese. They are still making phenomenal films. Obviously, they are not asking ‘Uss film ki kya opening lagi’, ‘Monday ko drop hui kya’. This is not a filmmaker’s conversation. Martin Scorsese put up a post the other day, ‘What’s the problem with the world? Why are we only talking about numbers? We are filmmakers. We need to talk about the story, characters, music, locations’. I’d like to follow these guys and see where they are going. They have stayed so brilliantly with the times.”

Milan Luthria admitted that there’s a lot of hard work in film direction but he enjoys the experience, “It comes with a hundred headaches of casting actors, controlling the budget, finalizing script, finding hit songs, promotions, doing the background score, getting good costumes etc. Then, you also need to get along with your producers, technicians, distributors and journalists. You have to be cordial. As they say, keep it simple, stupid (smiles).”

He also added, “You also want to realize that, there’s nothing really great about you. There are many that are better than you and there are many who will be better than you. Just give your best.”

Milan Luthria then once again gets back to analysing his past projects and also reveals that a fresh project is on the anvil, “I did Tadap as it was a remarkable story. For a young romance, it had a remarkable twist. Tara Sutaria did such a great job. Ahan Shetty is a fine performer; look at what he did in the climax. Unfortunately, the film was released in the Covid times. It was also exciting to do Sultan Of Delhi. And now, there’s something exciting coming up. It’s almost locked. It’s a film and it’s something that I have not done before. And it’ll be mounted on a big canvas.”
